Large language models like ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini don't read your mind — they read your prompt. The difference between a mediocre answer and an excellent one is almost never the model; it's the quality of the instructions. A good prompt does the thinking up front: it tells the model who to be, what to do, what it needs to know, how to format the answer, and what to avoid. That structure is what these tools build for you automatically. This page explains the method so you can trust the output and, if you want, get better at prompting yourself.
The five ingredients of a strong prompt
Nearly every reliable prompt contains five things. Miss one and the answer usually drifts.
- Role. Telling the model to act as a specific kind of expert ("You are a senior SEO copywriter") narrows its vocabulary, assumptions and standards to that domain. It's the fastest way to raise the quality floor.
- Task. One clear, specific instruction. "Write a 700-word blog post comparing X and Y for beginners" beats "write about X and Y" every time, because the model no longer has to guess your intent.
- Context. The facts the model can't know unless you supply them: your audience, product, tone, examples, constraints of the situation. Context is the single biggest lever most people leave unused.
- Format. Spelling out the shape of the answer — headings, a table, bullet points, a word count, a JSON schema — saves you from reformatting later and keeps the model from rambling.
- Constraints. The guardrails: what to include, what to avoid, reading level, banned phrases, must-hit keywords. Constraints turn a generic answer into one that fits your exact situation.
When you fill in a tool on this site, each question maps to one of those ingredients. You're doing the easy part — describing your situation in plain words — and the template does the hard part of arranging it into the structure a model responds to best.
A before-and-after example
Here's the kind of prompt most people type:
Write a product description for my water bottle.
It's not wrong, but the model has to invent everything — who it's for, what's special, how long, what tone. You'll get generic marketing filler. Here's the same request after the five ingredients are added, which is roughly what a generator here produces:
You are an expert e-commerce copywriter. Write a 90-word product description for a stainless-steel insulated water bottle aimed at commuters and gym-goers. Emphasize that it keeps drinks cold for 24 hours, fits standard cup holders, and is leak-proof. Use a confident, energetic tone. Open with a benefit-led hook, not the product name. End with a short call to action. Avoid clichés like "game-changer" and "elevate."
Same idea, dramatically better output — because the model now knows its role, the exact task, the context that matters, the format, and what to steer clear of. You didn't have to remember any of that; you just answered a few boxes.
